Decreasing our needs, we increase our capacity to save and to share

The economic fallout after Covid-19 is terrifyingly huge. So the economists tell us. Massive economic poverty will surely hit us. More and widespread suffering cannot be avoided unless there is a global well-motivated way of decreasing the material needs we can live without. There are many and we can do it.

Already massive cases of generous contributions worldwide have already been widely reported as a response to social effects of Covid-19 pandemic. This is great. And many are doing it. But the economic problem will be bigger after the pandemic is gone. Much more must be done.

We have to continue helping to lessen the dangerous impact on business and life-style. From the Christian point of view it makes sense to listen to Our Lord Jesus who tells us, “whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it” (Mt 10:38-39). This is why we have the teaching and practice of fasting and abstinence during Lent. This is also the way we fight against the worst of viruses – SIN.
