Mother and Daughter

Dear KNOT,

Ako po si Judy, hindi ko po tunay na pangalan.

Sabi nila, mas close daw ang mga babaeng anak sa kanilang ama, at mas close naman ang mga lalakeng anak sa kanilang mga ina. Lubos po akong nag-aagree dito. Yes na yes po ako sa statement na ito, dahil halos sa lahat ng oras ng aking buhay, si papa po talaga ang hinahanap-hanap ko. Hindi kumpleto ang selebrasyon ng graduation, birthdays, confirmation, at holidays kung wala si papa. Pinapahalagahan ko talaga si papa. I love my father so much.

Dahil sa sobrang pagmamahal ko kay papa, ay nakakalimutan ko na si Mama. Minsan, pagdating ko ng bahay, parang wala lang po ito sa akin. Nagmamano po ako sa mama ko, ngunit hindi po talaga kami ganoon ka close.

Ano po ba ang dapat kong gawin? Dapat bang pareho lang ang lebel ng aking pagmamahal kina mama at papa?

Dear Judy,

One cannot love two persons at exactly the same degree/level at the same time. There are situations where at one moment you may be more attached to one over the other and this may reverse in other moments. This is also true to parent-child relationships where you may tend to prefer one parent over the other in most occasions.

It is good that you have seen the vast difference in your love or affection towards your father and your mother, where you are much closer to the former than the latter. Awareness is the beginning of wisdom, so to say. And now that you are already conscious of this disparity, what are you going to do about it? Are you willing to demonstrate more that love towards your mother too? This is a challenge for you to go out of your comfort zone as you do acts of love for her. You may be surprised how rich will your relationship be, given this chance to mutually grow in your love for each other. I am sure you will rediscover more about each other along the way. Who knows, you may find another best friend, confidant, guide, inspiration, in her.
