Trusting God

Last October 16, 29 and 31 2019, Davao City and it’s neighboring areas in Mindanao like Davao del Sur and North Cotabato, among others, experienced earthquakes and aftershocks. Many were affected, some lost their houses, jobs and even lives were lost. On this trying times, people particularly those who are helpless need the support of the government and people who are financially capable of helping the needy.

For us, who can only do so may pray for the victims that they may be strengthened and thus, survive the said ordeal.

Moreover, just in case earthquakes and other calamities may strike again, let us be ready with our 72 hour survival kit. The said kit (the info I got from a forwarded message in my messenger account) is a bag that has a whistle (having a whistle can help a rescuer spot you), bottled water (you can’t survive without food but not without water), cellphone (if you need to call for help, you may use your cellphone just be sure your battery is full), emergency money (make sure you have cash on hand just in case you want to buy something), battery operated radio (listen for updates and monitor events), clothes (make sure you have dry clothes to change into just in case), flashlight (when electricity is out don’t be left in the dark), important documents in water-proof container, first aid kit and ready-to-eat-food (food is important for your survival).

On another note, let us familiarize ourselves with the barangay evacuation plan in our area. It must be noted that each barangay in Davao City has its own plan in case of natural calamities and other emergencies.

In case of calamities, let us double check the information about the situation before we share information. Use only information from official sources. Let us avoid spreading fake news.

With all that is happening around us, may we put our trust to God and dwell in His words in Isaiah 41:10 that says “Do not be afraid – I am with you! I am your God – let nothing terrify you! I will make you strong and help you; I will protect you and save you.”

For those who want to help the victims of the earthquake, the Social Action Center of the Archdiocese of Davao is now accepting donations. You may also coordinate with your own Parish for more information.

“Often it takes some calamity to make us live in the present. Then, suddenly we wake up and see all the mistakes
we have made.” – Bill Watterson
