Our eyes should be sharp for heavenly things
Excerpts of the Homily of Most Rev. Romulo Valles D.D., Archbishop of Davao, during the fiesta of St. Michael the Archangel Quasi-Parish in Eden, Toril, Davao City on September 29, 2019.
I might remark that here in Eden, St. Michael is very at home. Why? Because St. Michael resides in a paradise in heaven so this is very apt that the patron Saint here in Eden, Toril is St. Michael.
When we celebrate St. Michael, we are reminded of heavenly things.
When we celebrate the feast of angels, our mind is leveled up. We may have concerns on Earth but, on the feast of angels, let us level up.
One of the things where we have to level up is through reminding ourselves that whether we like it or not, the way we look at things can be very much influenced by the world today.
And our way of looking at things and understanding things can be done in a way that we are no longer sharp in the spiritual things.
A good number of times, the indicator of things that are heavenly are usually laughed at.
We usually set them aside.
We are mostly inclined to things that are not real but on heavenly things, we usually disregard them.
Things that are heavenly, really spiritual, and would remind us of God’s working even on Earth, for example God’s angels, are usually laughed at.
There are insurances that our eyes are not sharp anymore, and our faith is not sharp anymore to see signs of Your presence in the Lord today.
Maybe, our faith is weakened if our eyes are not familiar with the many indicators of God’s actions including the actions of angels in our midst today.
We are sharp on many other things but we are not so sharp anymore in seeing manifestations of God.
When life was simpler, poorer, and less developed perhaps, the eyes of humans were easier to see God’s signs.
But now, our eyes are attracted to so many things.
That is why, let us be inspired to level up and see the things of heaven.
