Catechists: Heroes of faith
They can be mothers, fathers, or loving children but commonly they are teachers—teachers of the Catholic faith.
Catechists are teachers who devote themselves in teaching catechesis to the young children in public schools. Despite the limited time given to them, they maximize it just to ensure that their mission of teaching is accomplished.
To be a catechist is a vocation and a mission. But more than that, they are chosen by God to be His help in formation, in making sure that the Gospel is alive, the stories of the Bible are made known and the tradition and teaching of the Church will never stop. They are heroes of our faith, making sure that salvation of souls is at hand.
This month of September, the Church celebrates the National Catechetical Month with the theme, “Catechist: Empowering the Youth for a Synodal Church”.
Let us pray for our catechists especially in the Archdiocese of Davao whose number has reached 3,000. They are lay volunteers with 97% comprising of women ages 56 years old (average), 54% of them teaching in public schools, 36% teaching in the chapels, and 67% of the catechized are elementary pupils.
They serve knowing that their mission is their motivation.
