4 Flood-hit villages under state of calamity

The City Council here declared four barangays under the state of calamity following the heavy flash flood the evening of August 28 that affected more 17,795 individuals.

During a special session on Thursday, August 29, the Council passed the declaration for the Barangays Los Amigo, Tugbok Proper, Talomo, and Wangan under the state of calamity.

With the declaration, the City Government will allot P50 Million Pesos to help the heavily affected barangays with the flash flood caused by a localized thunderstorm.

The said fund will come from the 30% Quick Response Fund out of the 5% Calamity Fund.

The 50M comprise of P35.59 Million financial assistance, P3.559 Million food assistance, P3.559 Million non-food assistance, P3.559 Million medicines and medical supplies, and P3.733 Million incidental expenses.

“Such widespread destruction necessitates relief operations, reconstruction, rehabilitation, and provision of basic services in the affected areas,” Councilor Danilo Dayanghirang, Committee chair for Finance, ways and means, and appropriations, said in the resolution.

On Wednesday evening, heavy rains caused severe flooding to many barangays in the city, including city streets and inland villages reaching neck-deep in some areas.

Some portion of roads were severely damaged, vehicles were devastated, plants were uprooted, and several other damages were reported on the affected barangays.

The flood caught many by surprise resulting to more than 3 thousand of families needing to be evacuated who are now in need of basic relief goods like clothings, ready-to-eat foods, blankets, and hygiene kits, among others.
