Sinulog Dance Spirituality?

I have heard this before but I cannot remember the source. Can a public dance contain a spiritual message? The Santo Niño devotees say, “Yes, that’s what ‘two steps forward and one step backward’ means.”

The call to holiness is for everyone to obey as much as possible, which is not easy. There are times when we thought we had made Two Steps Forward in our struggle to acquire more self-control, becoming more humble, more obedient. Then temptations hit us left and right; and we weakened, lost control, and fell. A big Step Backward! It’s a common experience. It is humbling, and at times depressing.

But we are reminded by the great saints: perseverance, not success, in spiritual life consists not in never falling but in rising every time we fall. And we can rise because we are assured by St. Paul: “Just as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by one man’s obedience are many to be made upright… But however much sin increased, grace was always greater; so that as sin’s reign brought death, so grace was to rule through saving justice that leads to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 5:19-20).
