Traffic regulations and public safety to be included in primary, secondary curriculum

The City Council passed on final reading the ordinance requiring all primary and secondary schools to include traffic regulations and public safety in their curriculum.

The said ordinance was passed under the Committee on Peace and Public Safety of Councilor Maria Belen Sunga-Acosta.

The purpose of the ordinance is to educate all students in primary and secondary schools in the city on traffic regulations and public safety in order to reach all levels of students under the basic education program in understanding traffic regulations and public safety.

It is also aimed to strengthen and raise the awareness of students regarding traffic regulations and public safety measures which will serve as their foundation in dealing with future circumstances.

The Public Safety Modules designed by the Department of Education was launched on December 11, 2018.

The module was in cooperation with the City Government, Land Transportation Office, Davao City Police Office, Public Safety and Security Command Center, Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, Central 911 and Bureau of Fire Protection.

“Based on the action plan of DepEd, I believe this will be implemented next year,” said Acosta.

“What is good is that we have the ordinance and the curriculum in place simultaneously. We have a good timing and coordination (with the coordinating parties),” said Acosta.

Acosta also expressed that the said ordinance will enhance the awareness of the children on traffic regulations and public safety in an early age.

“Based on the piloting of the modules in some schools, the DepEd has noted from the feedback that students now help in educating their parents on proper traffic regulations and public safety,” Acosta said. (Julianne A. Suarez)
