TNSH Students and Scouts conducted a community service
Community service is a non-paying job performed by one person or a group of people for the benefit of the community or its institutions. Community service is distinct from volunteering, since it is not always performed on a voluntary basis. It may be performed for a variety of reasons (Wikipedia).
Almost three hundred students, scouts and some faculty members joined the Coastal Clean-Up Drive last Saturday, August 25, 2018. It was a community service initiated by Mr. Edgar V. Floresca, a Senior Crew Leader in line with the Scouts’ Advancement activity and an Acting English Department Head for contextualizing G-10 Lessons. The activity aims to enhance students’ awareness on global warming, concern and love for nature.
The activity also helps the community to be aware of their responsibility to the environment and the nature itself. According to Mr. Jan Jan Matobato, 30 Years old and a resident of Talomo Proper, when he was asked, “Unsay imong ikasulti sa maong gimbuhaton sa mga estyudyante Jan?” siya mitubag, “Maayo kaayo na kay mura pod mi ug gipahinumduman sa among responsibilidad sa kinaiyahan”. A 77 year-old grandmother, nanay Estelita M. Calves, also commented when asked of the same question, “Maayo na para sa mga bataon aron dili sila maghimu ug dautan sa atong katilingban ug makalimpyo pa sa atong baybayon aron makahatag atraksyon usab sa mga turista.” For Ma’am Cathty Benabente, a Senior Crew Leader and a 2BH, “The activity makes our boys happy while helping the community. It is also one of our advancement tasks for them.”
It was started at around 5:30 until 9:00 from Talomo Beach Areas up to the end of Bago Beach. There were an approximately 90 sacks of accommodated non-biodegradable materials collected to be hauled by the CENRO through Barangay Bago Aplaya. Some people may say it’s a simple thing, but we believe it can minimize the effect of some wrongdoings to our marine life and can contribute to educate some of our fellowmen who do not care about their environment. Shannon L. Alder once said, “If you were born with the ability to change someone’s perspective or emotions, never waste that gift. It is one of the most powerful gifts God can give—the ability to influence.” (Edgar V. Floresca)
