DavOr Joins Nationwide Anti-Cavity Campaign

CITY OF MATI, DAVAO ORIENTAL—In the effort to promote “healthy smiles”, more than a hundred school children here have participated in the Philippine Anti-Cavity Campaign which was launched at the Provincial Covered Court of the Provincial Capitol on March 28, Wednesday.

Sponsored by Colgate-Palmolive Philippines, the kids were taught with proper oral care through an oral health education and brushing drill.

Provincial Health Dentist V Dr. Jerame Yuson, who led the anti-cavity campaign here, said this is a “comprehensive program that focuses on lessening the number of children with tooth decay as research shows that 9 out 10 children have tooth decay.”

“Tooth decay does not lead to morbidity but if it is taken for granted it would potentially initiate diseases like heart disease, gastro-intestinal problems, arthritis, to name a few. Tooth decay also causes malnutrition, affects our social interaction as well as our education,” she said.

Dr. Yuson urged the parents and the teachers to help their children and students maintain proper oral care as “Davao Oriental is aiming for zero cavity being one of the recipients of this nationwide campaign brought to us by Colgate-Palmolive Philippines.”

Dr. Yuson has also led the said campaign in Caraga on March 22.

Vice Governor Niño L. Uy, who represented Governor Nelson L. Dayanghirang, commended the parents for being able to support their children in maintaining oral health.

“We’re very happy and grateful to you for participating in this program of the government. And just like our other programs here in the province, we hope for the sustainability of this campaign,” he said.

With the campaign’s localized mantra “let’s keep DavOr smiling,” eight school children who have been practicing oral health were given freebies. Dr. Yuson has challenged these kids to take good care of their healthy teeth as they will undergo follow-up checkup this coming June. (Riza Golez)
