Am I still the hope of the church?
Death is everywhere in the life of a youth. Based on the latest Human Immunodeficiency Virus/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS) Registry of the Philippines, 1,962 new HIV cases were reported from July to August this year, or an average of 31 cases a day. More than half of the cases reported were from the 24-34 age group, while 31 percent were aged 15-24.Also, close to 800,000 people commit suicide every year according to a World Health Organization (WHO) fact sheet updated in 2017. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among youth aged 15 to 29. From an incurable disease to a killing emotional and psychological problem, are these young people victims?
Tracing back, others would want to blame it to irresponsible parenthood, early pregnancy, while others with the emerging advances in technology, or with the mediocre way of life of our teachers of faith.
Yes, the problem is there, but the truth is here. The youth remains to be hope of the country and the church. So, each should ask how can he still become the hope of the church.
In life, asking the right question is always a good thing. The famous adage, “Don’t ask what the church can do for you. Ask what you can do for your church” is very familiar to us. This is something that we can ponder upon.
Life begins to unfold its meaning, only if a young person will just be keen to observe on how the world works. Do not wait for others to spoon-feed life to you. We are given life. It is up to us to make it good or bad.
Our task is to actively act by seeking the truth. There is no more time left to sit back and become couch potatoes and check our girl or boy crush on Instagram and Facebook.
As our Lord Jesus told us, ask and it will be given to you, seek and you will find, knock and Jesus will willingly with a smile open the door for you. He will tell you the truth that will set you free.
We are God’s children and heaven is our home. This world, no matter how tiring things may be, as St. Therese said, “Our ship and not our home.”
Combat death which is everywhere in the life of a youth.
