Primary Christmas symbols
The Most Rev. Romulo G. Valles, D.D., Archbishop of Davao and President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, reminds us of the “Belen” and “Parol”, which can be lighted, as primary symbols of Christmas.
The “Belen” depicting the poor baby Jesus with His parents in the stable with the various animals present and His visitors, reminds us of the God who became one among us. His coming is so humble, “sharing in our humanity that we may share in His divinity.”
As Pope Francis says, “The Nativity Scene is the suggestive place where we contemplate Jesus, who having assumed our wretchedness, invites us to do likewise through our acts of mercy.”
The “Parol” which can be lighted, not that overly native-looking one wrapped with coconut parts which cannot be lighted, reminds us of the light of Jesus. He is our guide throughout the year.
The “Belen” and “Parol”, not Santa Claus and Christmas tree, should take priority places in our homes and offices. What a disaster it would be if you have a life-size Santa Claus and a beautifully decorated Christmas tree without the “Belen” and “Parol” as your Christmas decoration.
Merry Christmas to one and all!
