On Wonder Woman, War and Love
Last June 3, 2017, together with my sister, my nephew and my two kids we watched the movie Wonder Woman. We had a wonderful experience in watching the movie for it was in IMAX 3D and it was a treat from my sister. The beautiful movie was about Diana/Wonder Woman played by Gal Gadot, princess of the Amazons who is trained to be a warrior in the island of Themyscira. As a young naive woman, Diana rescues pilot Steve Trevor played by Chris Pine after his plane crashes off in the island. Steve told the Amazons about World War I where he is an allied spy. He also told them about the conflicts in the outside world of the Amazon Island. Diana being certain to want to end war defies her mother’s order and takes with her the sword (The Godkiller), shield, Lasso of truth, and costume that will turn her into Wonder Woman. She then leaves their Island with Steve determined to end the war by finding the God of War that is Ares.
There is a line in the movie uttered by Diana that caught my attention, she said “I used to want to save the world, this beautiful place. But the closer you get, the more you see the great darkness within.” Said line made me think on how we can save the world of today from chaos of war and destruction. Our country is not spared from war, what is happening right now in Marawi saddened a lot of people. How can we help achieve peace in Marawi and also in other areas of the world where war is present? As civilians all we can do is to include them in our prayers and petitions. May we ponder on what Pope Francis tweeted last June 2, 2017 when he said that “Through the darkness of today’s conflicts, every one of us can become a bright candle, a reminder that light will overcome darkness.”
Another quote from the movie that I liked was when Wonder Woman said that “Only love can truly save the world.” Indeed, if we will truly love each other, the world would be a better place for everybody. However, the world today is in chaos, wars against terrorism are prevalent. If only it would be that easy to love each other as what the Lord asked as when He said “Love one another as I love you (John 15:12)”, then, we could stop war and atrocity. Likewise, selfishness, pride, prejudice and arrogance that which creates war will have no space in our society. Therefore, peace will be achieved and wars will all be history.
On another note, if you have time I highly recommend that you watch Wonder Woman. Aside from it being a great movie it is also a nice diversion for us to be away for awhile amidst the chaos of the world. (Bing Orbeta-Robles)
