2 active fault zones in Davao City, nationwide earthquake drill set
There are two active fault zones in Davao City that may be the cause of earthquakes.
This was revealed by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Philippine Institute of Volcanogy and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) headed by OIC Director Dr. Renato Solidum, Jr.
He said that there are barangays in Davao City that are situated within The Unnamed Fault Zone and West Fault Zone.
Solidum added that they have extended their efforts to educate the public so that they will be informed what an earthquake is and its effects on lives and properties.
To create public awareness, a nationwide earthquake drill will be conducted at 9:00 am on June 29, 2017. In Davao City, the event will be held at the University of Mindanao, Bolton Campus.
An estimated 400 participants will be joining in the earthquake drill from the different sectors, namely: academe (students and teachers), civic and government.
The public is advised to be cautious anytime because an earthquake may possibly result in tsunami, fire and landslides.
It is advisable, according to Solidum that we will be informed of what ground our house is located and if it is within a fault zone.
According to Dr. Solidum, the appearance of an oarfish is not the basis of an upcoming quake because there’s no scientific evidence that can support it.
He admitted that the animals usually emerge from their habitat if they are disturbed in the deepest part of the sea but added that it’s not only the quake that can possibly disturb the sea. “Hindi natin masasabi na ang oarfish ay batayan na may lindol na darating kapag nagsilabasan ang oarfish, lumalabas sila kapag nadisturbo ang kanilang pamamahay ngunit hindi lang ang lindol ang dahilan bakit sila nadidisturbo, at hindi naman natin nasisiguro kung lumabas sila before sa lindol at doon ba nanggaling sa epecentro,” Solidum ended.
