Inversion of Values
Last Sunday the Manila Times published a statement of the National Transformation Council (NTC) as a Sunday Read. The title was, “We need an alternative to flawed elections”. I hope our CH readers read it. It has something very important as far as conscience is concerned.
Very significant paragraphs to consider are the following: “11) Fifth, as the day of the election nears, the political campaign assumes an increasingly frightening character. 12) There seems to be a flagrant inversion of values in which evil is applauded and celebrated wildly, while that which is sacred, true, good, and beautiful is laughed at and scorned by some popular idols and the mob that follows them blindly.”
One of these “popular idols and the mob that follows them blindly” is the presidential candidate from Mindanao. During the past months until this week he openly uttered value-statements directly in defiance of what the Church teaches about life, capital punishment, rule of law, respect for the pope, women and family life, etc. Although he explained that’s the way men talk, and apologized but the apology is hollow and hardly convincing.
It is really “frightening” not only because the so-called good and educated Catholics are supporting him thereby putting in question the authenticity of their Christian life. It is seriously frightening because the demon of perverted moral values is taking the place of Jesus and His teachings. Evil seems to triumph over the good!
I think the time has come for Catholic Christians to defend the sacred teachings of our faith even at the risk of being persecuted and killed. We must, according to NTC, “resist with all our minds, with all our hearts, with all our souls, with all our strength.” We must unite and speak out loud and clear. Yes, we must condemn the evil nut not the evildoer, the sin not the sinner, the crime not the criminal. For we believe in the conversion. Retaliation? Martyrdom? So be it. This is the true cross. Without it there is no authentic Christian life.
