They came with their cane, others with their wheel chair assisted by their family and some of them came alone with the strength that they have. Around 7 a.m. at San Pedro Cathedral, Davao City, sick and elderly people arrived to attend the healing mass and there were about 500 of them who came. This was to celebrate the 24th World Day of the Sick and Elderly with the theme “Entrusting Oneself to Merciful Jesus like Mary: Do whatever He tells you.”

The event was assisted by volunteers from Oasis of Love Community who helped the sick and elderly people to find their seats inside the church. The Davao School for the Blind also attended the mass and they gave a tribute by singing a song “Amazing Grace” during the communion.

The healing mass was presided over by Archbishop Romulo G. Valles. In his homily he emphasized “tanang buot makabaton kang Kristo manghimamat kita sa mga masakiton kay sila larawan sa kalbaryo ni Kristo.” And also he added, “helping the sick is the best way to show love and care. Ginabuhat kini para sa paghiusa diha kang Kristo.”

During the mass it was also highlighted that this celebration is not just to give importance to all the sick and elderly people for one day only but this should serve as an inspiration to start and continue in helping them. (Reynaldo Bariquit | UIC intern)
