Cardinal Tagle: Jubilee of Mercy needed now more than ever
The opening of the Year of Mercy approaches amid heightened security in and around the Vatican and throughout the city of Rome, as well as in countless other cities throughout the world, in the wake of recent terrorist attacks and threats of further violence, while war and civil disturbances continue to threaten peace and stability around the globe.
In an exclusive interview with Vatican Radio, the Archbishop of Manila and President of Caritas Internationalis, Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, said the world needs the Year of Mercy now more than ever. “I believe it has become more urgent,” said Cardinal Tagle. “When we see the acts of violence – senseless violence – we see also the consequences of the lack of mercy,” he added.
“We hope,” concluded Cardinal Tagle, “that this Year of Mercy can awaken minds and hearts – even [among] non-Catholics – to ask the question: ‘how do we restore mercy in our time?’” (Vatican Radio)
