Joshua

Men of the Scripture: Joshua

JoshuaHis name means “Yahweh is Salvation”. He had believed that God had already delivered Jericho into their hands. Joshua’s obedience was nourishing his faith and his faith nourishing his obedience.

His work: He was Moses’ aide and successor, a military commander and statesman. He had been encouraged by the Lord’s command; “Joshua son of Nun, be strong and courageous, for you will bring the Israelites into the land I promised them on oath and I myself will be with you.”

His character: As a result of his great attitude of trust and obedience towards God, who made them all possible, his remarkable military successes were achieved. Joshua had experienced no longer fear but courage, as though the soil of this new land was already yielding an abundant harvest to nourish him.

His Sorrow: He and the Israelites were consequently prevented from entering the Promised Land for forty years. It was because the Israelites had failed to believe his good report of the Promised Land.

His Triumph: He had led to victory in Canaan and established them in the land that God had promised their forefathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

Key Scripture: Deuteronomy 31:1-8; Joshua 3:5-13, 6:1-5

Promises:
“The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.“ (Deuteronomy 31:8)

“You know with all your heart and soul that not one of all the good promises the Lord your God gave you has failed.” (Joshua 23:14)

Reflection: God is the source of all powers in heaven and on earth. Not only Joshua believed every word God spoke and acted on faith, but every one of us has given this power by God. Whatever God had said to him, Joshua willed. Many times that God said personally to do our responsibility. Countless victories, that God had offered, had won in our lives. There are tendencies that we focus on our own difficulties rather than on the God who promised to help us. We confess for our weaknesses and ask God to give and strengthen our faith through prayer and devotion, and take the risks God asks of us especially in delivering and leading God’s people.
