Laity Week
Laity week is the church’s way of reminding the clergy and the religious that the church is the people. It is like recharging the battery so the car can start. It is physically impossible to be fully energized 365 days of the year. Yet the people take its cue from the clergy. If the kura paroko weakens, the parokyanos also feel the same way, and vice versa.
Laity week is addressed to the clergy so that, though spiritually or physically tired, they must give them their all following the good example of the good shepherd. The duty to take care of the parishioners is a very rare and precious gift from the Lord.
We celebrate Laity Week by honoring the clergy who, through great determination and effort, do their very best to take care of their flock. We likewise honor the faithful who, with zeal and dedication, participate in the activities of their parishes.
“It belongs to the laity to seek the kingdom of God by engaging in temporal affairs and directing them according to God’s will. They live in the world… they may contribute to the sanctification of the world, as from within like leaven, by fulfilling their own particular duties” (Lumen Gentium, 31).
