Even Doctors Get Sick

doctorFirst of all, I would like to apologize for not having posted recently. A few weeks ago, one of my misfortunes struck me. I was in my weakest moment… Well, physically. I cannot imagine myself being my own patient. Fever was at its peak accompanied with extreme cough for several days. I started treating myself with medications but to no avail, still those symptoms persisted. I was then wondering if I will be admitted or not. Yes your right, doctors at times are you know, hardheaded. We teach our patients what to do, how to take care of themselves and what to avoid! But when it comes to our own health, we always tell ourselves, “am ok”… even if we’re not.

As human beings, we also feel the same signs and symptoms the same way our patients do. We also get headaches, experience fever and chills, our platelets also drop when we get sick, the only difference between us doctors and patients is that when we experience these things, we only consult our brilliant minds and leave the rest behind.

Practicing this kind of attitude does not do any good. Its not a good practice telling our patients to do this and that and eventually will end up telling these things only to ourselves. Doctors know best! If your doctor tells you about something, then perhaps it’s the right thing to do.

Thank God I was already recuperating after a few more doses of these wonder drugs. Rest was also at my side constantly reminding me of how busy I was. Then I told myself, like what I always tell my patients, drink lots of water, have enough hours of sleep, exercise and have a balance diet.

So, the question there is… Are you also the “doctor” treating your own self as your own patient? Or are you the “patient” who goes to the doctor when you feel you need to?
