Pope Francis’ Magic
I read a report earlier this week about communist Cuban President Raul Castro, after meeting with Pope Francis, indicating that he was returning to the Catholic Church. Cuba has been an “enemy” of the US for half a century. It was through the recent facilitation of the Pope that both countries resumed diplomatic relations and the economic blockade of Cuba lifted by the US Papal magic at work.

FLORES DE MAYO—The month of May is the season for fiestas and the traditional Flores de Mayo. Yes, let’s all celebrate, parade and get dressed for the occasion. But let’s not forget it’s our expression of devotion to Mama Mary.

CHINA—The way things are shaping up, our country is on a collision course with China in our territorial dispute if this is not handled properly. I remember having a chat with the previous Chinese lady Ambassador Ma. She was stressing a more Asian way of settling issues among neighbors by doing bilateral negotiations. The fact is, we cannot go to war with China. We need not mention what is obvious. Besides, we have Chinese blood in our veins.

RIGOR—Elections is just 12 months away. Let’s face it. What it takes for a politician to win is principally the reason why only a few good men, who can “stomach” the travails and the challenges of being a public official, venture into politics. But those who do and who do public service in earnest are also blessed in many ways. Of course, the road is not always that rosy. There are humps and bumps along the way. I know whereof I speak.

BANGSAMORO—The final fate of the BBL will be known in due time. Whatever its final outcome, the fact remains that the work for peace is continuing and never ending. There are many other paths to peace.
