Keeping it Cool this Summer

keeping cool on summerSUMMER is almost over, and yet we still have all the time to expose our precious cargo to all the elements including the scorching heat of the sun weather for fun or activity. Our mortal enemy…Dehydration!

Yes, indeed, our body is made up of trillions of cells working hand in hand together to maintain its normal physiologic function. Given the circumstances of being exposed to the environment, it adapts to all the misfortunes it gets. Am pretty sure if only our body can speak to us on how and what it feels, all it would say is “I could not ask for more!”

It’s time to teach ourselves on ways to prevent and counter the harmful effects of dehydration…How? These very simple yet self-sustaining tips will help prevent detrimental consequences of not being extra careful.

  1. When outdoors, wear light-weight, light-colored clothing. One layer of such clothing will do the trick and its best to avoid over exposure under the heat of the sun.
  2. Drink plenty of fluids to at least 2-3 liters a day. This will replenish losses that incurred while you were doing your activities. A sports bottle will always come in handy!
  3. Remember these signs and symptoms once your body becomes dehydrated: Lightheadedness or Dizziness, Headache, Thirst, Dry lips/tongue, Wrinkling and Drying of skin, Less urine and Dark colored urine.
  4. If you happen to have experienced any of the following signs and symptoms above, stop what you’re doing, rest on a cool, well-ventilated area, and continue to hydrate yourself!

So, enjoy the remaining days of summer and always remember to take good care of yourself! (Joshua Daniel Dela Cruz. M.D.)
