TNHS tandem prevailed during the 12th Math Mania
DAVAO CITY—Two witty boys from Tagum City National High School championed in the annual Math Mania Quiz bee held last February 23 at the NCCC Mall, Activity Center.
The event was organized by the Society of Math Majors of the University of the Philippines Mindanao Chapter to lessen the fear of students towards Mathematics and develop appreciation towards the subject.
There were 37 participating schools within Davao City and its’ neighboring Provinces. Among the 74 participants were David Xyz T. Callena, a 4th yr. student and Josh Aleczi S. Martin, a Grade 9 student who garnered an over-all score of 115 points and became the instant victors of the event. This was made possible by the perseverance and dedication of their coaches, Mrs. Melissa Keith A. Sarilla and Mrs. Alona Flores.
“We didn’t have much time to prepare for this event. That is why we were surprised with the results. I think our participation with different Math Contests helped us to win. We are very blessed,” David said. What made these boys win was good communication, team work, trust and quickness.
The first placers were Ralph Raleigh P. Dalig and Abel Leandro B. Paras together with their coach, Mr. Steve G. Zacal from DRANHS while the second placers were Christian Jayson Juierba and John Angelo Varquez with their coach Ms. Donna Marie Seneda of Davao City National High School. By giving their best, all Math quizzers were winners already.
The Math Mania is not only a competition of who is the smartest but a tool for students to realize that Math is not a headache, a problem and an obstacle but it is fun, exciting, challenging and enjoyable. (Myka Tuvilla Gadia)
