OBU Summer Workcamp 2015 Set

The 46th Christian Youth Citizenship/Leadership Training Program of the Operation Build-Up (OBU) Movement/Katinpunan Ng Diwang Sambayanihan will be held from April 6 to May 17, 2015.

This 40 day workcamp is geared towards inculcating total integral human development to the youth focusing on the 40 days of sacrifice that our LORD JESUS CHRIST endured and triumphantly overcame. This training is significant especially at this period of our history when our world is bombarded with all the distractions and the onset of highly advanced information technology where global communications is just a click of your keypad.

POPE FRANCIS said during his recent visit that while information technology has its bad effects, if used in the proper context, it can also be useful in propagating the word of God especially to the youth.

The OBU Workcamp was founded by the late FR. PAUL DC CUNANAN in 1969 while he was the Director of the Social Action Center of the Archdiocese of Davao. It was during that stormy chapter of our history when student activism was at its peak.

Various political beliefs and ideologies were spread amid the violence and hopelessness brought about by the Marcos dictatorship. He sadly observed that the focus of the youth is slowly veering away from the teachings of Christ and the Church. It then came to him like a flash of divine intervention to develop a program like the OBU Training Workcamp.

Forty-six (46) years and hundreds of graduates later, the summer training workcamp continues. Forty-six years and seven presidents later and democracy was restored, this youth training program is still significant.

The death of Fr. Paul in 2008 was perceived to be the demise of the OBU Movement and the Summer Workcamp, but the officers, members and supporters refuse to allow its extinction. As a matter of fact, young, active and God fearing people from other provinces are coming over to join and participate.

Conducting a training of about 30 to 40 people including the staff for 40 days maybe a huge task for some. Logistics alone would incur a considerable sum. Other groups require funding assistance from foreign or local donors. However, OBU summer workcamp operates otherwise. It survives from the meager registration fees and contributions from its members and supporters. We will be happy to accept contributions of financial support in cash or in kind.

The Workcamp shall begin after the Holy week on April 6 and we are inviting interested young people to join us. The venue shall be announced later. If you are active in your parish, you can always seek the assistance of your Parish Priest for support.
