Church’s stand on Divorce continues to be immutable
The Church’s belief on divorce remains to be negative as it breaks the teachings about marriage as beautiful, infrangible and sacramental.
In the first edition of “Kolokabildo 2015” (which literally means discussion), a live public affairs program by the Mass Communication Internship Program of Holy Cross of Davao College, Inc. last March 3 and 5, several questions were asked on the current stand of the Church concerning the ongoing battle of the Divorce Bill.
Questions respecting the intervention of the church on the legal processes of the state, still speculates among the people of the country specially when pending bills which discusses morality, such as Divorce Bill, is under the table of the law makers.
Father Orlando Angelia, Director of the Family and Life Apostolate of the Archdiocese of Davao, clarified in an open forum that the stand of the church on the legalization of Divorce Bill in the country is not in conflict with the Article III Section VI of the Constitution or the separation of the Church and the State since above any existing law is the law of God.
“Marriage as a beautiful union of couples shouldn’t be separated by any law since at the beginning of the marriage the couple vowed to be together, in sickness and in health, till death do us part,” said Fr. Angelia.
“Issues about disowning divorced couples is not true since instances like how Pope Francis expressed that separated couple is invited to take the Holy Communion is just one way of showing that the Roman Catholic Church is merciful,” he added.
Fr. Angelia also said that marital problems do exist but it doesn’t mean troubled marriages are irreparable. Marriage is a union, the couple should talk and reconcile in times of problems especially if they have children. (Macky Ocay and Bal Kenneth Aballe)
