Increasing number of Indigenous People (IP’s) in the City seen

The City Social Services and Development (CSSDO) recorded an increase in number of Indigenous People (IP’s) families who are now in Davao City to celebrate the Christmas season and they were allowed to ask Christmas gifts from the people until December 26.

According to CSSDO assistant chief Liwayway Caligdong, stated during the Kapehan sa Dabaw at SM Annex Davao,that from 8,000 lumad families last year, the number increased to 11,126 as of December 14. These IP’s have started to arrive in the city as early as December 1, but not all of them are coming from the barangays of the city. Some families were from Talaingod in Davao del Norte, Arakan Valley in North Cotabato, and Surigao provinces.

The IP’s are allowed to stay in the designated shelter areas where they were provided by food, shelter, water, and health services for their living. There were eight identified shelter areas in the city where the IP’s can stay: Bankerohan, Matina Aplaya, Bunawan, Buhangin, Toril, Mintal, Tugbok and Calinan.

Dolly Remojo, Assistant Chief of the City Environmental and Natural Resources Office (CENRO), said they have assigned street sweepers who will be maintaining cleanliness.

The IP’s families will also be provided with transportation by the City Engineer’s Office (CEO) upon their return to their respective barangays on December 26.

Engr. Andy Leopardo, of the CEO, said they provide assistance for transportation. Where they will provide 24 to 28 dam trucks for the IP’s.

Samuel Cruz, Assistant City Health Officer, said they have assigned health personnel who will be present in the designated shelter sites. They will provide medical consultation for the IP’s.

We are present sa mga shelter areas within 24 hours.” Cruz said.
