Nanay Pini, a Catechist @ 74
“Nanay Pini” is how everyone dearly calls Josefina Barcoso in San Isidro Labrador Parish and in the community of Catalunan Grande.
She is a catechist – that is what she has been known for 40 years.
74 years old and has started her vocation as a teacher-catechist in 1974. She had to go as far as Toril for her trainings and diligently walk at least 3 kilometers each week to the Immaculate Conception Parish in Mintal for her meetings and formations way back.
Grey haired yet a lector who reads without the aid of spectacles, she keeps the command of the voice but never has it become hoarse at her age; walks graciously reflecting her strong personality; actively joins church events and pays attentively to the speakers with the commendable punctuality.
She has a family to take care of but has gone beyond by nurturing the faith and Christian life of many children in the community. She has also produced children who themselves have become like her – a catechist.
Her struggles in life never hindered her; instead, has lead her and the whole of her family close to God and in the service for and with the Church.
She is indeed an exemplary laity; she has built and is still building the Church and her people.
