Power and Light Off

Light and power generated by electricity are basic daily needs. So basic and so needed are these that every minute of our day and night is affected. Either awake or asleep we cannot be without them for a long time.

In addition, water runs out when power is off in cities especially served by a water system. Then more and more problems follow.

Yes, enormous and disastrous problems indeed.

These problems will be felt in various activities of individuals, communities and institutions in social life, in the economics of trade and commerce, in political processes of government, and in culture, education and sports. The situation is highly alarming given the many unresolved issues here in Mindanao.

The incompetence and lack of political will of the present administration is clearly visible and deplorable in this situation.  Its moral authority to govern appears highly questionable. If nothing is done soon and fast, the simmering social volcano will surely explode.

In the meantime, we people of faith, Lumads, Muslims and Christians, must intensify our prayers to the Almighty to raise the level of water in Lake Lanao and Polangi River. We pray also that repairs of hydro plants along the Agus river in the 2 Lanaos must be done immediately and properly. In our prayers we also include the smooth and speedy construction of the approved coal plants.

Everyone should make personal efforts to acquire the disciplined habit of conserving the correct use of power, light and water. Likewise, seminars on climate change should continue and environmental consciousness should be promoted everywhere by everyone. All these constitute also our moral duty to care for one another and for the planet.
