The code of practice for safe kite flying

Classes are finally over and summer break is officially on. It’s the perfect time to get the whole family outdoors and do something together. Surely, among those on the list is kite flying. It’s an easy and inexpensive activity for the family to get out of the house and enjoy some air.

But before you head outside and fly your kite, Aboitiz-owned Davao Light and Power Company would like to share a few tips to make your high flying escapade safe and fun:

1. Pick the right kite flying day. Mother Nature’s cooperation is a big factor if you want to have a smooth kite flying experience. There should be enough breeze to keep your kite flying steady. If it starts to rain or looks like it’s about to, you should probably call it a day or reschedule the activity. There might be lightning later on and you don’t want to become a live lightning rod. Remember Benjamin Franklin’s kite experiment? Only fly in safe conditions.

2. Never fly near power lines. Power lines carry over thousands of volts which can travel down to your kite and reach you regardless of the kind of material it is made of. This can cause electrocution which may lead to fatal injuries or even death. In the event that your kite gets caught in a power line, immediately let go of the string and move away. You may call Davao Light at 229-3572 and inform the company of the incident.

3. Avoid all other obstacles as well. Do not fly kites near trees to avoid getting it caught in tree branches. As much as possible, try not to do it near roads and freeways too. It would be difficult to get your kite if it accidentally lands on a road full of moving vehicles and may cause accidents as well. An open area is still the best place to conduct the activity.

4. Wear some added protection. If you decide to go kite flying when the sun’s still high up, be sure to cover yourself in sunscreen to protect yourself from the UV rays. Flying big kites can hurt your hands too, especially for the kids. Using gloves helps prevent line burns and cuts.

Time spent with loved ones is always priceless. By keeping these tips in mind, you will be able to ensure everyone’s safety while making the most out of this little afternoon venture.
