Power Failure Ahead

POWER — During a forum called by the Mindanao Business Council few days ago, it was a consensus that within the next two years, Mindanao’s power situation will not improve, but will worsen. Watch the coming summer months when Lake Lanao water recedes.

TIAMSON ARREST — The recent arrest of the spouses, Benito Tiamson and his wife Wilma in Cebu is indeed a big blow to the CPP/NPA/NDF.  They are considered the top leaders of the Communist Party of the Philippines. Although Joma Sison and Louie Jalandoni are the principal negotiators based in the Netherlands, the Tiamson couple control the local cadres and the principal organs of the CPP.

PEACE AGREEMENT — Finally, the peace agreement with the MILF is signed. That ends the long arduous journey that spanned about 17 years with all ups and downs. Congratulations to all those who helped make this happen. And let’s all help to implement what was signed. Otherwise, it will be only as good as the paper on which it is written.

SOCIAL MEDIA — During the international media forum in Yangon, Myanmar a few weeks ago,  I found interesting the discussions  on social media. What differentiates writers in Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc? While professional journalists adhere to veracity, independence and accountability,(VIA) social bloggers usually do not verify or validate information that are passed on or shared. It’s journalism “in a hurry”.

STILL BLEEDING— Almost 6 months have passed since the Zambo siege but innocent victims are still “bleeding” and children are still dying due to squalid conditions in the evac centers.  The much-promised rehabilitation and the normalization of the lives of the “bakwits” are still unfulfilled. Malacañang, which made the judgment call on choosing the use of force (rather than a negotiated end to the standoff)  must be held accountable. Of course, the MNLF must also answer for this tragedy. But the primary responsibility now rests on Pres. Aquino for not taking care of the suffering citizens, his “bosses” kuno.

VACATION TIME — With all schools closed during summer, each one can ease up a bit and take one’s time. And family schedules, including expenses are a bit lessened. Time to wake up late and take things easy.
