Media Apostolate Braces for Catholic Radio Re-opening BOT signals go, but…
The Davao Verbum Dei Media Foundation, Inc. (the media apostolate of the Archdiocese of Davao) in its annual meeting held last Saturday braced itself for the possible re-opening of the Catholic radio in Davao.
This was after the second round of Radio Feasibility Study presentation created by the Research and Database Ministry, escalating excitement within the group.
Yet, as an added recommendation, Bp. George Rimando emphasized on the need for a series of consultations to the clergy, lay leaders and GKK coordinators. These were given a nod by the body and so are expected to take place this summer.”Besides, they can help in the sustenance of the radio as they will also be the same people supporting and listening to it.”
The latest show of interest among the administrators was fueled by the need to intensify the information campaign on disaster preparedness, mitigation and response as well as on the celebration of the Year of the Laity and the call for new evangelization.
To learn the lessons from the past, the policy-making body has recently ordered to investigate further causes of DXGN’s 3rd closure in 2008. Factors given were the deteriorating equipment, lack of support from its Catholic constituents, among others.
Further, the possibility of getting new machinery is being eyed instead of rehabilitating the old facilities computing them with almost the same cost.
Certain by the need to add additional medium aside from publishing the weekly Davao Catholic Herald newspaper and maintaining its social media, this re-opening can reach a wider audience for value formation and evangelization.
DXGN 89.9 FM was opened in 1988 with the studio located at San Pablo Church Compound after the conduct of a Feasibility Study by the Daughters of St. Paul. Its transmitter is located in Shrine Hills.
TOWARDS BALANCED PROGRAMMING
Branded as the mouthpiece of the Archdiocese of Davao, the audience survey results embedded in the said FS, has revealed that the programs must not only be limited to one aspect which is doctrinal yet to include other areas of human formation, as well.
All programs must be aligned with the vision-mission of the media apostolate and the thrust of the local church of Davao.
Listed program include the following: Ministry updates, Archbishop’s exhortations, Legal and emotional counseling, Economics, Livelihood, Inspiring stories, Academics (Religious Education) on-air, Socio-political and Church’s history and stance on current issues.
The BOT will again meet on June 14, 2014.
