“5G: Grand Gathering: Grateful for God’s Graces”
In 1953, Fr. Pierre Tritz, S.J. started to organize a group of Filipino-Chinese students in Araneta University, Manila, to develop their Christian formation and their social and intellectual values. It was founded under the name “Chinese Christophers.”
March 1954 saw the birth of the Chinese Catholic Youth (CCY) under the tutelage of SCA in Manila headed by Fr. Luis Papilla, S.J. The CCY was granted a one-year probation period by Msgr. Juan B. Velasco, O.P., D.D., Bishop of Amoy, Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Manila for the Chinese Parishes and General Director of all Chinese Catholics in the Philippines. It started with one unit of six former Chinese Christopher members.
During the Pre-National Convention held on May 23, 1975, the delegates decided that a change in the name of the organization was called for. This was proposed by His Excellency, Msgr. Velasco. From the Chinese Catholic Youth, it became the Filipino-Chinese Catholic Youth (FCCY). This was a small gesture to recognize the full-blooded Filipino members who have actively worked hand-in-hand in reawakening the faith in their Chinese brothers. The CCY has come to realize the value Filipino youths have contributed to the success of its mission. As such, the FCCY Newsette took the place of its predecessor in linking all Christian brothers and sisters in the entire country.
Since its birth in 1954, Chinese-Catholic Youth (CCY) is now known as Filipino-Chinese Catholic Youth (FCCY), a national organization that envisions the spiritual maturity of today’s young people through a comprehensive formation program. Under the guidance of our currentnational spiritual director, Rev. Fr. Peterson Tieng, LRMS, and Filipino-Chinese Apostolate National Coordinator, Bp. Leopoldo Jaucian, SVD, DD, the chapters from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao regularly hold prayer meetings, fellowship activities, recollections and retreats to cultivate bonds of friendship between the members and a firm sense of being daughters and sons of God.
With God’s grace,FCCY will be celebratingits 60th anniversary since its inception in 1954. Gathering 500 participants from all over the country, the FCCY will hold its 27th National Convention on April 2 to 6, 2014 at Angel’s Hills Retreat and Formation Center, Tagaytay City, with the theme “Grand Gathering: Grateful for God’s Graces”. The gathering aims to foster unity in Christ of the Chinese-Filipino youth from different communities in the country, as it looks back to the experiences that made FCCY into what it is now after six grace-filled decades. The convention will include talks from inspiring speakers, spiritual and liturgical celebrations, and teambuilding programs to prepare the future leaders of the Filipino-Chinese Catholic Community.
