International band to present musicale February 14 and 15
It’s just over a month to a one-of-a-kind musical event in Davao City.
With over 2,500 shows in 49 nations around the world, GEN ROSSO, the international performing arts group of the Work of Mary or Focolare Movement breezes into town for a unique musicale February 14 and 15 at the Holy Cross of Davao Gym, Davao City.
How the multi-racial performing arts group weaves contemporary music, choreography and modern stage techniques into a show addressing social issues of conflict and violence such as bullying in schools, homes and in the workplace is something young people, parents, educators, lay leaders and all agents of evangelization must watch.
Entitled STREETLIGHT: One for Love (Living the Faith, Knowing the Truth), the musicale tells the story of Charles Moats, an African-American living in a Chicago ghetto in the late 1960’s. At 17, Moats finds himself caught between enemy lines in a gang war. However, convinced that unity and brotherhood are not only beautiful ideas but ideals to live for, he opted to say no to violence for which he eventually paid dearly with his own life.
It was his YES to this ideal of unity, it could be gleaned in hindsight, which proves that peace based on genuine brotherhood is indeed possible as could be seen in the musicale Streetlight.
Preparatory activities already rolled off last month with a workshop for 200 student participants from different schools and youth organizations. This, after a memorandum of agreement was signed between the Holy Cross and the Focolare.
While the main goal of the project is to discover and strengthen the positive values and potentials of the youth as proactive agents against bullying, delinquency and youth violence, the proceeds it hopes to generate will be used to assist Bukas Palad Foundation, SOS Children’s Village and the victims of super typhoon Yolanda.
The project has been endorsed by Archbishop Romulo Valles of the Archdiocese of Davao. (@dcherald/PR)
