Davao’s Catholic Paper marks 60
The Davao Catholic Herald, Asia’s longest running-Catholic newspaper has celebrated the diamond jubilee of the print media apostolate of the Archdiocese of Davao.
Through the Thanksgiving Night, November 27 at NCCC Mall Kadayawan Hall, former directors, editors, writers and contributors of the print media apostolate of Davao gathered together and celebrated the night which was highlighted with a Eucharistic celebration presided over by Archbishop of Davao Romulo G. Valles, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Verbum Dei Media Foundation, Inc. , who runs the Davao Catholic Herald.
The print media apostolate bagan in 1952 through the then Davao Sentinel headed by the former Mayor of Island Garden City of Samal Rogelio Antalan. The paper was then renamed “Ang Taboan” which means, marketplace. In the 1980s, the paper is named Davao Catholic Herald.
In his homily, Archbishop Valles pointed out the reason why the Archdiocese has the print media apostolate is to preach the Good News, adding, the name of the foundation speaks of the Word of God (Verbum Dei).
He said if Davao Catholic Herald did not preach the good news in those 60 years, and without God’s gracious presence in the midst of former directors, employees and contributors, the paper would not be able to sustain its apostolate.
He also lauded the sacrifices of former directors, employees and contributors who have been part of the early years of Davao Catholic Herald—both in good times and bad times.
The archbishop also challenged the people to support the apostolate all the more as the Davao Catholic Herald all these years has not only served the local Church of Davao but also the neighboring dioceses especially the Davao, Digos, Tagum and Mati ecclesiastical subregion.
