Dormitium de San Pedro: A place for eternal rest
Beneath the San Pedro Cathedral lies a place where one can lay to rest their loved ones, close enough to visit everyday and be part of the daily prayers during the Holy Mass.
Archbishop of Davao Romulo G. Valles led the Holy Eucharist and rite of blessing on the opening of the Dormitium de San Pedro, a columbarium and ossuarium below the San Pedro Cathedral Parish where the remains of three bishops of Davao lie.
Archbishop Emeritus of Davao Fernando R. Capalla also graced the occasion with his presence as concelebrant along with Msgr. Leonardo Vicente, the rector of San Pedro Cathedral and other members of the clergy.
The Dormitium de San Pedro will be a repository of the remains of the priests of the archdiocese and lay faithful.
Abp Valles said the site is a dignified and simple place where one can place the ashes of their loved ones. The word “Dormitium” means a place to rest or sleep. It also reminds the faithful that our permanent place to stay and the true home is in heaven saying, “we will be called to eternal glory.”
Originally, the cemeteries were built near the church where the priests can include them in their prayers while celebrating the Holy Eucharist but due to scarcity of space and some other reasons, the cemeteries were located in other locations.
Archbishop Valles lauded the consecration of Dormitium de San Pedro since the liturgy is done in the afternoon of Oct 31, wherein the liturgy celebrated is the All Saints Day.
The design of the crypt was done by Architect Iluminado Quinto, Jr. It is composed of more than 900 units. Those who want to avail may contact 226-4740 and set an appointment with the rector. (John Frances C. Fuentes)
