A fruit a day keeps the doctor away
“An apple a day keeps the doctor away,” so goes the American saying. Davao is said to be the fruit capital of this country. Visitors would look for durian, marang, lanzones, mangosteen, pomelos, to name a few as part of the treat they associate with Davao. These fruits do wonders for our bodies aside from the pleasure of eating them especially with our loved ones. For instance, guyabano is a craze when it comes to fighting cancer and this fruit abounds here.
Aside from the fruits’ benefits, the fruit trees help regulate the temperature of the area. Trees are the air conditioners of nature. Trees cool the air and help bring rain. When clouds come across a cool weather system, usually in the mountains, they dump their load and thereby replenish our aquifers. Mind you, Davao City has a huge aquifer – from Ulas to Binugao and up to the north way across Mintal, Tugbok, Calinan, Malagos, all the way to Mt. Talomo.
What else? Economics… We encourage everyone to eat fruits daily because we are helping people from the countryside all the way down the marketing line of distribution. Nobody wants to cut down a productive tree that helps bring in the much needed returns in the form of income. On the contrary, it will vigorously encourage people to plant more trees, thus help green our countryside.
Therefore, remember this, “A fruit a day keeps the trees standing and away from the axe man.” Buy, eat and as environmentalists say, “Save the planet.” Glory to God!
