A 10 for AMUMA Cancer Support Group Foundation, Inc.
“A hospice for cancer patients in Davao; to seek out, visit, and pray-over those with cancer; to learn, share and serve more; to invite and allow GOD to renew one’s life and re-focus on AMUMA; to grow out of the fear of cancer, to have more members and become global; to hold fund-raising events” – are just some of the dreams of AMUMANs who had a July 21, 2013 recollection with Fr. Albert E. Alejo, S. J. at the Capuchin Padre Pio Friary in Catalunan Grande.
Aside from the recollections, the AMUMA Cancer Support Group Foundation, Inc. also, yearly: makes Holy Week Way of The Cross to the homes of member and non-member patients, ending with a holy mass; gives testimonies on invitation, holds free medical-dental missions to identified barangays; and ties up with the Davao Cancer Society and other support groups in its cancer awareness programs. AMUMA’s second book is in the making, after “Sige Daw” Stories of Cancer Survivors and Caregivers published in 2003.
Linked by the prayers of those who Dra. Margie sought to intercede months before, Bernard Buela’s feature in the Davao Catholic Herald of Dra. Margie’s testimony led Fr. Bob Hogan, S. J. to inform her to contact Fr. Alejo who had the same desire she had. AMUMA was launched on July 5, 2003 by co-founders Dra. Margaret P. Domingo and Fr. Albert E. Alejo, S. J. with a holy mass, “share-a-lugaw,” induction of officers, testimonies, and fund-raising at the Ateneo de Davao Jacinto Mini-Auditorium.
Its members come from different parishes and barangays all over Davao City – doctors, dentists, nurses, med techs, psychologists and other allied medical professionals, bankers, government and private employees, housewives, retirees, priests, nuns – all with the same desire to “be present” to the sick. Members are “warriors” who are still undergoing treatments, survivors on remission, caregivers, and friends of those with cancer. From 2003, an estimate of about 190 members have since died, including Dra. Margaret P. Domingo.
On July 28, 2012, the AMUMA Cancer Support Group Foundation, Inc. will give a free medical-dental mission in Talomo Barangay Hall in coordination with, and the help of Barangay Captain Jimenez. Capping the 9-day novena daily masses and the recollection to prepare spiritually for this mission, we will celebrate the 8 a.m. holy mass with Fr. Roger Duhaylungsod at the San Lorenzo Ruiz Parish, Talomo.
The present officers are Dr. Jose Beltran – President; Ms. Mae Hipolito – Vice President; Mrs. Nieva B. Azarcon – Secretary; Mr. Steve Y. Hermosa – Treasurer, Mr. Romeo O. Tan – Board of Directors, and Fr. Albert E. Alejo, S. J. – Spiritual Director.
We need you, and we continue to invite all to be members: in prayer; in offering of their pain for GOD’s use; as donors of time, talent and treasure; as sharers of life and life after in all its forms. There is no membership fee. Through the generous help these ten (10) years of Tito Ding Diaz, Tita Elsie and family, our office is at the 2nd floor of the Davao Imperial Hotel. Join us in prayer for this year’s election of officers, and for AMUMA’s future plans, especially for a Davao cancer hospice.
Again, please join us to witness and share “the ever flowing, never failing grace of GOD- of The GOD WHO heals where it hurts, The GOD WHO builds on our initiatives, The GOD WHO understands our deep, dark depressions, The GOD WHO works in mysterious ways (Fr. Albert E. Alejo, S. J., his foreword in the Sige Daw book.)
To GOD be all glory!
