Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul
On June 29, Thursday, we celebrate the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul. Saint Peter is known as the “Prince of the Apostles”. A Galilean fisherman who became a fisher of men, he became the leader of the Twelve Apostles. He is the patron of the fishing industry.
Saint Paul is called “Apostle of the Gentiles”. A Pharisee and former persecutor of the Lord Jesus, he preached the Gospel and wrote thirteen letters in the New Testament dated from 60-65 A.D. He is patron of the lay apostolate, of Malta and Greece. He was martyred in Rome in 67 A.D. Each in his way, these two saints gave us the example of boldness and courage.
Taking Saint Peter as patron of the Archdiocese of Davao, we need the example of these two great saints in sustaining and enhancing communion of communities. Like them, we need the guidance of the Holy Spirit, support for each other in the midst of opposition and show of leadership as having been called to serve. May we be inclusive, go beyond the confines and adapt to our present circumstances while remaining loyal to the apostolic teaching.
Saints Peter and Paul, pray for us!
